1] Invoicing and  Payment

If you have to collect payments from your clients; they will ask for invoice. If you are running an online store or just providing some kind of service you have to prepare a professional invoice for them.

2] Email and a Browser

These are the first two things that you need; of course you will need a computer, either desktop or laptop and an internet connection. But those are so essential and common in all the households, that they do not deserve a mention.

There are many free email providers; you can use Gmail or Yahoo! Mail. Google Chrome or Firefox are quite popular and user friendly browsers widely used these days. You can choose any of them.

3] Notes

4] Storage

You must be working with lots of data; all web workers need to work with many files be it image, document or unfinished code repository. Have you ever thought what would happen if your computer crashes? You have to use an external hard drive to store your data. And there are applications that allow you to sync data between multiple computers such as Sync Toy – you can use any such application as well. Even Dropbox can allow you to store and sync data in multiple computers.

5] Writing

Even when you are not a blogger or freelance writer, you may need to write a lot. Writing is at the heart of web and all web workers have to do this. You can use Open Office or MS Office for writing. Solutions like Google Docs or Zoho Docs allows you to store and collaborate your writings online. Many people prefer to write in Notepad that comes with Windows. But Notepad does not have a rich text editor.

6] Images

Not the graphic artists only, freelance writers may need to work with images sometimes. There are paid and free tools for image editing. Adobe Photoshop is probably the most popular image editing software. There is SnagIt which deserves a special mention. When you need royalty free images or you want to buy images for your project you can look at Everystockphoto or iStockphoto.

7] Time Management

Most web workers find it the toughest thing; time is the most important resource. You have to stick to the deadlines and deliver quality work. There are several tools that allow you to manage your time efficiently. You can use Gmail and Google Calendar or you can try yaTimer or Toggl.
